We are a team that is passionate about providing opportunities for parents, carers, children and young people to explore the possibilities of improving their mental health and their onward experience of life itself. We are early intervention and prevention.
Normal Magic forms a strength based framework for this exploration. A framework that builds on individual and unique ways of balancing mood and looking after mental health, through the good times and the bad times. Even small changes can bring moments of balance to mood, build resilience and improve overall mental health. Improving mental health sometimes needs all the help and care it can get.
If you are concerned about new or emerging mental health needs of your child or young person, or you simply want to review and improve your families mentally healthy lifestyle, we are here to consider with you if Normal Magic can contribute.
Our team offers personal wellbeing conversations and interventions across the age range of 0-18 years.
What is a Personal Wellbeing Conversation?
The first step is our offer of reassurance to you. We very much want your experience of help seeking to be a positive one, regardless of whether your next steps are with us or not.
We all need additional support at times to manage and overcome the way we feel, to make changes to our ways of communicating, caring, loving, nurturing, striving and perhaps improving our very being. Valuable support is often provided by our family or friends, however when our children and young people display recurring or worsening anxiety, low mood, self harm, clashing relationships or emerging problems attending school, a Personal Wellbeing Conversation with us could bring additional value to your consideration of your situation. Our additional value, we believe, is sharing our extensive knowledge and experience in child and young person mental health care.
Members of our team offer an initial Personal Wellbeing Conversation to you as parent or carer, to listen to what you notice about your child or young person’s mental health that brings you both concern and reassurance. We will listen to your view of any identified needs, or we can help with identifying the need, and together explore options. There might be prevention or early intervention opportunities with us here at Normal Magic or it might be that there are NHS, local or national services that potentially provide what you are seeking. Either way, our Personal Wellbeing Conversation aims to outcome an agreed plan with you, which might include us collaboratively navigating access routes to other services.
We want to reassure you, this will be your plan. We hold no expectations. We hold no judgement. This is your world. We are simply here for you to talk it out, we will share our experience, our clinical knowledge and the evidence base that informs possibilities.
What is an intervention?
When we talk of Interventions we are referring to a series of direct sessions with child or young person and parent, collaboratively designed yet informed by science, evidence and research. Our interventions are always delivered with a flexible approach that holds unique, individual needs at the centre of any plan.
This collaborative plan of care is designed based on what you currently know, what you want to know, what you want to change or improve. This may include setting goals, practicing strategies and communication styles. You may want to involve other important people such as a grandparent or a teacher or a mentor or a social worker. Your plan of care is bespoke to you. If it works for you and doesn’t harm others, that is all that matters. We will happily work with you in isolation or contribute to a wider package of care you already receive from a team, whether that is a family and friends team, a professional team, a school team or a combination of all three.
We offer a variety of flexible mental health interventions that may become options during the Personal Wellbeing Conversation. An idea of our age specific intervention menu can be found on the left of this screen.
We will always try and ensure you have options wider than us, this may be access to free online services, considering free NHS, voluntary or charity mental health services. You may wish to check out those options now, please see our resources page to begin your exploration.
